Salem Arts Creates: Windows into Artists' Worlds

The Salem Arts Association is proud to present “Salem Arts Creates: Windows Into Artists' Worlds,” a vibrant project that showcases the creativity of our talented artist members. With images captured by some of our member photographers, these windows offer a glimpse into the diverse artistic voices that define our community.

Thanks to our partnership with the Peabody Essex Museum, we are thrilled to display these works in these Essex Street storefront windows, bringing Salem’s unique artistic spirit into the heart of the City of Salem.

From painting to pottery, fashion to photography, and glasswork to woodworking, visitors will also discover creators that reflect the breadth and ingenuity of our membership.

By sharing these creative works in public spaces, Salem Arts Association fosters a sense of community pride and encourages residents to connect with local artists. Our exhibitions at Salem arts Association invite everyone to experience the transformative power of art, nurturing artistic talent and creating opportunities for meaningful involvement.

Together, these windows into artists’ worlds celebrate the diversity, imagination, and camaraderie that make Salem Arts Association a cornerstone of local culture. We invite you to explore, be inspired, and join us in supporting the creative pulse of Salem.

Salem Arts Creates Historical Painting

Artist: Thomas Darsney

Photography by Bobbie Bush

I’m Thomas Darsney, a contemporary realist figurative painter. I’m mostly self-taught, with some classes at the Boston Guild. Painting chose me early in life—it’s simply how I express myself. My work is shaped by the geometry, color, and architecture of the human form. When you view my paintings, look for intention, harmony, and subtle historical references within the canvas’s boundaries.

As a multi-disciplinary artist, I create video, digital collage, and installations that explore the intersection of technology, state power, and the environment. I use digital techniques and “forever chemicals” as metaphors to reveal their impact on our bodies and surroundings. Being diagnosed with ADHD and Autism gave me clarity and inspired me to embrace my truth and creative passions.

Salem Arts Creates Assemblage Art

Artist: Zenovia Limberakis

Photography by James Bostick

I create assemblages inspired by my Greek Orthodox grandmothers' home altars and the psychedelic glue art of the 1960s. Using objects like vintage spoons, broken mirror, and jewels, I transform everyday things into radiant shrines that celebrate the extraordinary in the ordinary. My work is meant to be a focal point for reflection, prayer, and gratitude, inviting joy, light, and a sense of wonder into daily life.

Salem Arts Creates Landscapes

Artist: Katherine Miura

Photography by James Bostick

Painting drew me in as a child, but I paused to pursue medical school. Moving to Swampscott reignited my passion—now I paint seascapes, landscapes from my travels, and family pets. Years later, creative friends inspired me to pick up the brush again, and Plein Air painting gets me outdoors, by the water. I even have a few old jackets painted with album covers from my rock and roll days. It feels good to return to art.

Salem Arts Creates Drawings

Artist: Jessica Murdock

A graduate of the Museum School in Boston, I’ve spent two decades in Salem creating art under a towering tree by the North River. My journey began at Norwich Free Academy, where I explored portraiture, painting, woodworking, and fibercrafts. I completed a five-year Drawing a Day Project, design tattoos, participate in local figure drawing, paint murals, restore my antique house, and run an Etsy shop, all while caring for rescue pets and seeking new creative challenges.

As a feminist oil painter, my work centers on the human figure, blending contemporary perspectives with historical influences. Salem Arts Creates Painting

Painting by the ocean has become my daily inspiration. Living by the water since 2012, I’m drawn outside by the ever-changing colors and textures of the sky and sea. I use oil paints on canvases of all sizes, relishing in plein air sessions or in my studio. Organizing local paint outs and figure drawing groups connects me with community and nature, bringing me peace, joy, and a sense of renewal with every brushstroke.
