Introduction to Drawing Workshop

In this class students will learn the fundamentals of drawing. Students will focus on composition and how to observe value. They will experiment with multiple charcoal and pencil techniques to gain an understanding and control of the media, and will begin to apply a full value range to still life studies, creating form and movement throughout the composition.

Includes FOUR session

  • Session 1: Saturday May 10, 10:00 to 12:00 AM
  • Session 2: Saturday May 17, 10:00 to 12:00 AM
  • Session 3: Saturday May 31, 10:00 to 12:00 AM
  • Session 4: Saturday June 7, 10:00 to 12:00 AM

Instructor - Nicole Ryan

Nicole Ryan began her teaching career at Marblehead High School where she built Studio Arts curriculum with other educators and taught to a wide range of students. She has also taught art courses at Interlochen Center for Arts, Walnut Hill School, Marblehead Arts Association and Swampscott Council on Aging. Nicole took time off from her Studio Teaching to raise a family. She enjoys the natural beauty of the North Shore and continues to use watercolor and drawing mediums to create new work.  


Supplies Needed

Workshop participants must bring the following supplies. 

  • Drawing Pencils
  • Charcoal Pencils
  • Vine Charcoal
  • Pressed Charcoal
  • Charcoal Pencil - Black and White
  • Kneaded Eraser
  • 18x24 charcoal or mixed media paper 
  • Drawing Board for the 18x24 paper size
  • Rag or old tee shirt to protect your lap

Class Outline: 

All classes are Saturdays 10 am 12 noon


Session 1 - May 10

  • Create value scales with vine and compressed charcoal
  • Undersketch of object
  • With a light source, add value to create form and depth on and around object
  • Extension: Object Study

Session 2 - May 17

  • Complete an abstract drawing creating various textures with charcoal
  • Still life with multiple objects
  • Undersketch/composition
  • Value 
  • Textures
  • Extension: Chair Study

Session 3 - May 31

  • Using a mid tone paper, focus on lights and darks
  • Value scale
  • Practice object
  • Multiple objects or a space 
  • Extension:Choose an object with texture or reflections (ex: cut pepper or orange, glass jar). Draw your object larger than life, add textures and values.

Session 4 - June 7

  • Final drawing, student choice
