  An exhibition by Miles Smith

  “Separations” is a collection of art prints that navigate the discomfort of vulnerability, the instability of identity, and the distortion of memory.  Miles Smith utilizes a variety of serigraphic methods, both analog and digital, to explore the medium’s potential for self-expression over its more common commercialized use.  His goal is to communicate and connect with others through mutually understood symbolism and conversation with art history.  Viewers are invited to consider how the show’s themes may apply to their own human condition. 

  Miles will be graduating from Salem State University this spring with a bachelor’s degree in art and design and a concentration in printmaking.  He is currently an intern at the Salem Arts Association and hopes that he can help other artists display their own works in the future.

  Inspired by PEM - Saints, Sinners, Lovers, and Fools:  Our 19th Annual PEM Inspirational Exhibition invites artists to take inspiration from the PEM exhibition “ Saints, Sinners, Lovers, and Fools, on view at the Peabody Essex Museum through May 4, 2025. 

  From PEM: “Flemish painters from the 15th to 17th centuries created extraordinary works of art amid a period of political turmoil and unprecedented prosperity,” said Karina H. Corrigan, PEM’s Associate Director–Collections and the H. A. Crosby Forbes Curator of Asian Export Art, who serves as the coordinating curator of the exhibition at PEM. “Saints, Sinners, Lovers, and Fools will transport visitors to this remarkable time in history and consider the many ways Flemish art and culture has shaped the world we live in today.”

  Salem Arts Association is offering four solo exhibitions in 2025, and is inviting member artists to submit applications. 
  

  The submission deadline is Monday April 28, 2025, and artists will be notified on or before May 2, 2025 of the jurying committee’s decisions.

  In order to be eligible, your Salem Arts Association membership must be current when you apply, and must remain active through your chosen exhibition dates. Submitting artists will select options for the following dates: (Exhibition committee will make final date assignment)

  1. May 24 to June 28, 2025 (reception date Friday May 30, 2025 from 6-8 PM)
  2. July 4 to August 2, 2025 (reception date Friday July 11, 2025 from 6-8 PM)
  3. August 9 to September 6, 2025 (reception date Friday August 8, 2025 from 6-8 PM)
  4. November 6, 2025 to December 14, 2025 (reception date Friday, November 15, 2024 from 6 - 8 PM)

  
  Applications will be juried by members of the Salem Arts Association Exhibitions Committee. Exhibition committee will make final date and gallery assignments.
  

  Small group shows (two or more people) are permitted.  In this case, please submit only one application and indicate clearly in your proposal every person that will take part in the show.  All artists that take part in a show must be Salem Arts Association members.

  Artists must submit their information and application using the online registration form (NOTE: You must be signed in to the Salem Arts Association website, using your Salem Arts Association password, to complete this registration), and include the following:

  1. Images of the work to be juried: 

     1. Provide a minimum of five and a maximum of 10 images of your current work.  Images must use the following file name format: the artist's first initial, last name, and the file number (e.g., jdoe-1.jpg).

     2. Artwork depicted in the images should be recently produced, with the majority of pieces not having been previously exhibited at Salem Arts Association galleries. 

     3. Submitted images must be representative of the quality, medium, and content to be exhibited. 

  2. The exhibition will be awarded based on the work that is submitted. It is expected that the artist will include some, if not all of the submitted work in the exhibit. Additional artwork mat be added to teh exhibition upon review by the exhibition committee representative. 

  3. The majority of the artwork should be for sale; Salem Arts Association encourages gallery sales and receives a 35% commission on all sales.  

  4. Provide the following information with your submission:

     1. Resume/Vitae containing your background, contact information, email address, phone, and website.

     2. A written description of your proposed exhibition, theme, content, and any special requirements for display.

     3. The estimated number of pieces and the approximate sizes of each for this show.

  Incomplete submissions will not be considered.

  If your exhibition proposal is accepted:

  1. The artist will remit a fee of $100.00 which will be used to offset the costs of exhibition and promotions.

  2. The exhibition will be held at Salem Arts Association one of four galleries.

  • Pickering Wharf Gallery (2nd floor rear, 14x16)
  • Hawke's Wharf Gallery (2nd floor front right side, 12x16)
  • Tucker's Wharf Gallery (2nd floor right side, 9x12)
  • Friendship Gallery (1st floor front right, 8x12).

  1. The exhibition will be installed the week prior to the opening day. Installation times may be negotiated with the gallery chairperson. 

  2. All exhibition artwork must be removed from the gallery on the last Sunday of the exhibition period.

  3. The artist will be present during the exhibition reception during their solo exhibit.

  4. The artist is expected to host a workshop or gallery talk event in the gallery during the exhibition. The date for this event should be planned with the gallery chairperson.

  5. Salem Arts Association will promote the exhibition on our website and social media, and will print a limited number of exhibit posters. Publicity graphic design will be a collaborative effort with the exhibiting artist and Salem Arts Association.

  $3500 in Awards Sponsored by Salem Arts Association Salem Arts Scholarships are awarded to graduating seniors attending any Massachusetts North Shore school (public, charter, or private), who are pursuing visual or performing arts at a university or accredited art school the following fall.

  Three scholarship awards will be offered

  • Creative Collective Innovation Award: $1000 award to a graduate who demonstrates creative innovation in visual arts, performance, or multi-media.
  • Ellen Hardy Memorial Scholarship: $1000 award to a graduate who demonstrates creative achievement in visual arts, performance, or multi-media.  
  • Paula Beaulieu Memorial Scholarship: $1500 award to a graduate who demonstrates creative achievement in the visual arts.

  Application process:

  Applicants do not apply for a specific scholarship. Our Scholarship committee will review all scholarship applications and award based on eligibility and other criteria.

  • Provide a personal artist statement.
  • Provide at least 5 samples (JPG images or media files) representing your creative work.
  • Recommendations from your faculty, instructors, or advisors are welcome but not necessary.

  Scholarships will be announced in mid May. The scholarship presentation will be held at Salem Arts Association Gallery in early June.

  Creative Collective Innovation Award
  

  The Innovation Award is sponsored by Salem Arts Association, and provided by Creative Collective. Creative Collective was created to support the critically important intersection of economic development and the creative workforce. It is a community of makers, artisans, creators, small businesses, and economic development strategists. The Collective fosters growth, sustainability, and scalability for small businesses, creative thinkers, organizations, entrepreneurs, and innovators.

  Be Bold! This award encourages inclusive innovation in any creative effort and celebrates student achievements that take their talent to new places through interdisciplinary work, collaborations, breaking systemic boundaries, and creating outcomes beyond the traditional.

  Award Purpose and Eligibility:

  The Ellen Hardy Memorial Scholarship

  Ellen Gibson Hardy (May 18, 1952 — June 18, 2017)

  An artist at heart, Ellen forged a career in the Art, Graphic Design, and Publishing world. She founded her own company, Hardy House, which was a full-service Art and Design business of which she was the proprietor for over 19-years working with the likes of MIT, Harvard, Yale, and many other educational and professional organizations. During the years as president of Hardy House she began to exhibit her own artwork at galleries throughout New England and taught Graphic Arts at the Cambridge Adult Center for Education and at Phillips Academy where she also served as Director of Publications for over 14 years.
  

  Ellen Hardy was a profound influence on the Salem artistic scene through her involvement with the Salem Public Arts Commission, the annual Salem Arts Festival, and Salem Arts Association, which she advocated heavily for. Ellen served for several years as a member and president of Salem Arts Association. She was also a prolific artist and performer herself. We are honored to offer this scholarship program in her memory.

  Award Purpose and Eligibility:

  The Paula Beaulieu Art Scholarship
  

  Paula Frances Beaulieu (May 28, 1947 - January 24, 2014)

  Paula obtained her B.S. degree from Lowell State University before obtaining her M.S. in Arts & Education at Florida Atlantic University. Her career included teaching grades 2 and 5 at Pearl St. School in Reading, Mass., author of children’s educational books, counselor, and educational toy developer to name a few. Most notably, Paula was an art educator, running her own business teaching people of all ages to “Connect with Their Creativity” for over 15 years. Paula was an artist throughout her life, a legacy she brought forward from her mother Rita Casey.

  After growing up in Methuen, Mass., Paula resided in Hollywood, Florida and Reading, Mass. (where she raised her two sons Dan and Matt) before moving to Salem, Mass., where she spent her remaining years. “Creativity occurs in the moment, and in the moment we are timeless.”

  Paula Beaulieu was an active artist in the Salem Arts Association and taught young and old alike through her program “Connect with Their Creativity.” Her family has chosen Salem Arts Association and Salem High School as beneficiaries of any donations made in her honor.

  Introduction to Drawing Workshop

  In this class students will learn the fundamentals of drawing. Students will focus on composition and how to observe value. They will experiment with multiple charcoal and pencil techniques to gain an understanding and control of the media, and will begin to apply a full value range to still life studies, creating form and movement throughout the composition.

  Instructor - Nicole Ryan

  Nicole Ryan began her teaching career at Marblehead High School where she built Studio Arts curriculum with other educators and taught to a wide range of students. She has also taught art courses at Interlochen Center for Arts, Walnut Hill School, Marblehead Arts Association and Swampscott Council on Aging. Nicole took time off from her Studio Teaching to raise a family. She enjoys the natural beauty of the North Shore and continues to use watercolor and drawing mediums to create new work.

  "Pride & Protest: Fighting for Love & Equality":  

  An exhibit in celebration of self-acceptance and resistance against societal oppression within diverse and marginalized communities, featuring works that highlight activism, historical struggles, and contemporary triumphs for love, equality, and justice.

  All member artists are invited to submit artwork for this exhibition that explores your inspirations and interpretations of the works in the PEM exhibit or general collections.

  FRAMING AND PRESENTING YOUR ARTWORK:

  All submissions must be properly framed and appropriately wired (no saw tooth hangars), and ready to hang.

  Wired images must have a tight wire positioned within the top quarter of the image height. All submissions will be inspected at take-in to assure they adhere to gallery standards. Submissions not meeting our standards will be rejected. Read our framing guidelines

  Salem Arts Galleries and Shop utilizes a hanging system consisting of a wire or rod suspended from a rail near the ceiling. We rarely use nails in our walls. Because of this it's very important to frame and present your work properly by following these rules. 

  • All work MUST be properly framed or otherwise presented for hanging. 
  • No wet paintings will be accepted
  • Works on paper must be under glass or high quality acrylic.
  • Plastic clip frames, Table frames (with leaning back), and document frames will NOT be accepted in the gallery. Don't use them. 
  • Framed items must include a taught wire properly fastened to the top quarter of the frame back. 
  • Artwork framed using sawtooth hangars, triangle hangars, and holes as part of the frame will be rejected.
  • Loose wires or wired below the top quarter will be rejected. If you can see the wire above the frame it's wrong.

  
  

  Sales: 
  

  Sales will be handled by the Salem Arts Gallery Shop Volunteers. A Commission of 35% of the selling price is required of Salem Arts Association member artists and will be subtracted from the price before payment. Payment of 65% of the selling price will be issued to the artist by check, generally during the month following the month of the sale (generally within 60 days).

  If your membership expires while your work is on display it will be subject to the non-member sale commission rate of 50%
  

  Non-members participating in exhibitions are subject to a commission of 50% of the selling price that will be subtracted from the price before payment. Payment of 50% of the selling price will be issued to non-member artists by check, generally during the month following the month of the sale (within 60 days).

  Tax Forms: 

  Salem Arts Association is required by law to submit 1099’s to the IRS from artists with sales, awards, or other payments for amounts totaling $600 or greater during a calendar year. A 1099 will ONLY be sent to the IRS if the total payment to an artist equals or exceeds $600. 

  To facilitate this, we require completed W-9 forms prior to giving out award and/or sales payments. Artists are asked to complete a W-9 form, or validate that current W-9 form information is accurate, when submitting work for sale. W-9 forms will be kept on file for three years. Artists are required to inform Salem Arts Association of any changes to address or other related tax form information. 

  Selling artists can check with your tax advisor for advice regarding claiming commissions as tax-deductible donations to the extent allowable by law.

  Interlaced: Art in Fiber & Form

  The Salem Arts Association announces an open call for entries for a dynamic showcase of functional or non-functional fiber blending traditional or innovative techniques as well as sculptures made from a variety of materials.  Works in both fiber and or sculpture create works that blur the boundaries between craft and fine art.

  All submissions must be properly framed and appropriately wired (no saw tooth hangars), and ready to hang.

  Wired images must have a tight wire positioned within the top quarter of the image height. All submissions will be inspected at take-in to assure they adhere to gallery standards. Submissions not meeting our standards will be rejected. Read our framing guidelines

  Salem Arts Galleries and Shop utilizes a hanging system consisting of a wire or rod suspended from a rail near the ceiling. We rarely use nails in our walls. Because of this it's very important to frame and present your work properly by following these rules. 

  • All work MUST be properly framed or otherwise presented for hanging. 
  • No wet paintings will be accepted
  • Works on paper must be under glass or high quality acrylic.
  • Plastic clip frames, Table frames (with leaning back), and document frames will NOT be accepted in the gallery. Don't use them. 
  • Framed items must include a taught wire properly fastened to the top quarter of the frame back. 
  • Artwork framed using sawtooth hangars, triangle hangars, and holes as part of the frame will be rejected.
  • Loose wires or wired below the top quarter will be rejected. If you can see the wire above the frame it's wrong.

  
  

  Sales: 
  

  Sales will be handled by the Salem Arts Gallery Shop Volunteers. A Commission of 35% of the selling price is required of Salem Arts Association member artists and will be subtracted from the price before payment. Payment of 65% of the selling price will be issued to the artist by check, generally during the month following the month of the sale (generally within 60 days).

  If your membership expires while your work is on display it will be subject to the non-member sale commission rate of 50%
  

  Non-members participating in exhibitions are subject to a commission of 50% of the selling price that will be subtracted from the price before payment. Payment of 50% of the selling price will be issued to non-member artists by check, generally during the month following the month of the sale (within 60 days).

  Tax Forms: 

  Salem Arts Association is required by law to submit 1099’s to the IRS from artists with sales, awards, or other payments for amounts totaling $600 or greater during a calendar year. A 1099 will ONLY be sent to the IRS if the total payment to an artist equals or exceeds $600. 

  To facilitate this, we require completed W-9 forms prior to giving out award and/or sales payments. Artists are asked to complete a W-9 form, or validate that current W-9 form information is accurate, when submitting work for sale. W-9 forms will be kept on file for three years. Artists are required to inform Salem Arts Association of any changes to address or other related tax form information. 

  Selling artists can check with your tax advisor for advice regarding claiming commissions as tax-deductible donations to the extent allowable by law.
